National Position on the Federal Judiciary

At the LWVUS 2024 Convention, delegates voted to move forward with a study on the federal judiciary. The study will be completed on a fast-track timeline in time for a position to be announced at the LWVUS 2025 Council in June 2025.

Our intention is to help develop a long-lasting position based on the principles of judicial independence, transparency, accountability, and ethics (and possibly others). Our goal is a position that outlines the values – the standards and norms – the League of Women Voters should use in evaluating proposed changes to policies, laws, and regulations about the federal judiciary. As you are aware, League cannot lobby or advocate for or against legislative proposals related to the judiciary without a position on which to base our actions.

Remember that as much as we all may want to address specific remedies in our US position, the position should be principle-based in order to ensure that it lasts for many years to come and allows us to address a wide variety of issues that may arise in future years. Our goal is for the resulting League position to be durable. Consider how many of the League’s positions were adopted decades ago and are as useful today as they were at their inception. If we write a position that applies to specific policy issues we know about and that are part of the current debate, it can limit action on other future issues.

We in LWVD have been learning about the federal judiciary, particularly at the March briefing, "Our Federal Court System 101" (you can view it here).  It is now time to come to consensus as a local League on the national position and we have three sessions where we can do this together.  Two are in person and one is by Zoom. You should only attend one session. You can find all the national resources here. The LWV Denver Board will then compile the results and send them to the national League.

As a grassroots organization, your voice is so important to this process. Please plan to attend one of these sessions!

Turn Up the Heat: Congressional Recess Guide for Action

Democracy depends upon informed and active participation. Eliminating public events where constituents can meet with their representatives and express their interests or concerns is antithetical to our country's foundation. The League is encouraging members and supporters to attend town halls to ask questions about what is happening with Congress and the Administration. If a town hall has been canceled or if there wasn’t one scheduled at all, there are still opportunities to act by visiting your district office, calling their offices, or sending our action alert.

Americans have the right to demand to be heard. Please use the resources on this LWVUS page to attend events, contact legislators, and hold them accountable during this and every recess period.
